New Asexual Documentary

I just finished a film called “not Broken Not Alone” which follows the asexual community as they prepare/participate in WorldPride this past summer.

I’m eager to get the film out to festivals worldwide in an effort to increase both visibility but also the broader conversation that I think asexuality brings up.  I started a kickstarter cammpaign to raise money for this goal

It would be really appreciated if anyone could help get the word out about this project- there are tons of cool rewards for donating, including a streaming copy of the film, and more! and some cake karma :D

(In case you forget, this was my last message I sent you: I’m sure I’m aromantic, but I don’t think I understand it enough at all so I’m confused. I’ve only ever ever felt lust and friendship for someone. I mean, romantic attraction is still just an ATTRACTION, right? So like, I watch romance movies and I wish I could have a romantic relationship with someone, and I always feel like I can and do (maybe) have romantic attraction, but it gets easily confused with lust. Does this make any sense? If it doesn’t I can submit but do you think I’m aromantic?)

——-

My biggest problem is it’s so easy to confuse lust with romance. I always fall into relationships purely on lust, but when that withers away like lust usually does, I get completely stuck. I’ve always thought of myself as a hopeless romantic before even discovering what aromantics are, so when I see someone and I believe with all of my heart it is romantic attraction, it always happens to be lust.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I’ve never ever ever had a pure, true romantic attraction to someone, but I don’t know if I’m incapable of doing so. Like I said, it’s not a true romantic attraction, because lust gets in my way so easily. Lust and squishes are the hardest things to mix together.

Hopefully this was explained better, asks always make it hard to send everything you want. I can always send this to an aromantic blog/forum, but I don’t follow any yet and I’ve known you guys for forever so it’s just a bit more comfortable I guess. Thank you!

A read more because the reply got sort of long.

Guys, just adding something to the relationship subject, remember remember to always put yourself first if you’re in a relationship with a sexual person. A lot of them are going to say many very wrong things, often not meaning to hurt you. And if you love them, your mind is going to believe a lot of that even if you really know it’s nonsense. A few years ago I entered a relationship as a pretty confident non-repulsed ace and 3 years later ended it repulsed/terrified of sex. He still doesn’t know that what he did was mental abuse. I’m not trying to scare any of you away from such relationships, I know many of them work out wonderfully and I honestly wish you best of luck there! It’s just a little reminder to watch your step there, try to make things clear from the start in whichever way works for both of you, but please don’t ignore the subject and just hope it works out in the end, I’ve been there and I don’t want any of you going through this, okay? Again, best of luck! <3

Hey, just wanted to mention that it looks like six years ago Fox news had a perfectly civil discussion on asexuality. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmXXgRvotGM) This “Red Eye” is something of a satire show that runs late at night.

Doesn’t make it any less offensive and terrible, especially because it shows on the Fox “News” website and with their logo. But something to mention.

Yeah, I’ve been informed it’s satire, but I’m glad you agree that it doesn’t excuse it. Satire isn’t some excuse you can hide behind. It was still really low and malicious and some people were triggered.

It especially doesn’t help since a majority of people haven’t even heard of asexuality and people tend to stick with their first impression of what they get of something that is foreign to them. And then they don’t even remember the context of how they heard it (source amnesia). It also doesn’t help that what they were saying is basically what people think anyway when they hear about it, so it can’t really be effective satire (if it truly is that, which, while it might have been a satire show, I’m of the opinion that that segment was too relentless and brutal) when most people would be inclined to agree with it at face value.

Quick note, the interview in this link isn’t perfect at all, of course, especially since they equate it to a lack of libido and doesn’t go into much detail at all really, but they are generally… decent. Respectful, at least.

Thank you very much for sharing this! Very much appreciated!

Carnival of Aces

Hi,

I hope this is ok to submit, but I wanted to spread the word about Carnival of Aces, being hosted at my blog this month. It’s a blog carnival for posts related to asexuality. This month’s theme is “compulsory sexuality.” You can find more information here.

I feel that the “everybody fucks” mentality in sexual health/sexual education communities is dangerous to asexuals, people with low/no libido, or anyone else who has little/no interest in actually having sex for whatever reason.  Here’s why:  When the person sees that, they immediately think “oh, this isn’t a place/community for someone like me” and turn away.

But sexual health is more than STDs and condoms and how to have sex without hurting each other.  It also has to do with diseases and defects which affect the reproductive system, or having unusual reproductive organs, and that can happen to anyone, sexually active or not.  So these people are feeling unwelcome in a place that has information they might NEED.

It’s also just another tacit reinforcement of society’s idea of “Everybody wants to have sex with somebody, and if you’re not interested, there’s something wrong with you.”  I get that “everybody fucks” is a nice snazzy catchphrase, but that’s not true sex positivity; sex positivity also respects your right to not be interested in sex.  I think they could come up with something better.
