A lot of people don't think asexuality is a thing/think something is wrong with it so even if they ARE asexual, they won't come up as such on a survey. Others don't know about it and don't discuss things like sex drive and sexual attraction and just think, "well I'm not attracted to the same gender, I must be straight". I bet once asexuality has more visibility/acceptance, it'll come up as more than 1%.

I have always completely 100% agreed with this idea, yes. I don’t really like it when the 1% statistic is quoted.

I really hope that someday we’ll manage to get enough recognition for better research to be done. That would be heartening and interesting.
